Hey I posted this at Mayo's house. Just thought you might want to know.
Hello everyone. I don't know if you remember me telling you this but today is the day there is a threat of voilence at the High School where my 3 daughers attend. The school gave the parents the option of sending your kids or if you chose you could keep them out of school it would be an excused absence. I sent mine this morning. I don't want my kids to live in fear. This kind of thing has happened at their school before and nothing happened. On the way to work I went by the school. 3/4 of the kids aren't there. The parking lot looks so deserted. There are several police cars parked there. I will second guess my decision all day. Waiting for 3:00 when they get out of school is going to be so hard.
I just read that and was coming over here to tell you that I hope this day ends soon enough for you.
I know it must have been hard to send them knowing what might possibly, but hopefully not, occur.
Your kids' safety will be in my thoughts today. They're going to be fine.

The last thing the schools want is for your kid to be kept out; they get paid for good attendance. So, if they sent a letter saying your kid could stay home, then there was a high risk and your kids shouldn't have been put in harm's way. Bad decision, in my opinion. No disrespect meant.

If there is a known threat, the schools can't be held liable for 'making' you send your child to school. They have to allow it as an excused absence.
Liability is the issue with the schools, not good attendance.
Anonymous, by law, the schools must disclose if there was a threat made against the school. They must give all the information pertaining to the threat. It is then up to the parents to decide whether or not to send their child to school.

However, let me explain. I was raised by a very over protective father. From the time I could walk I was taught to fear everything. From killer germs to acts of God. I was never allowed to go to my friend's houses to spend the night. I couldn't go anywhere alone. My mother drove me to school everyday because the bus wasn't safe. I know my father did this because he loved me. I understand that. But I turned out to be one fucked up person who was afraid of everything. I won't have my girls turn out like that. I've taught them to be careful. Never to trust strangers, always to have a phone with them. I want them to be strong young women who can take care of themselves. I don't want them to fear the world. I don't want them to fear the "what if".

I grew up in an overprotective household. I know what it's like to live in that fear. I wasn't allowed to do anything, and when I did, that fear got planted in me with, "You know what could happen? This could happen and this could happen. That could happen too and it would be really bad. You shouldn't do this...but if you really want to..."
It sucks to have that always riding on your mind.
I commend Elena for her bravery. They are her children to teach and instill knowledge in. If Elena felt comfortable in sending them, then that was entirely her judgement to make. Had her children no wanted to go to school because of their intense fear, I would say Elena would have probably readdressed the situation, and there may have been a different outcome.
But that was entirely her decision to decide.

Elena, I support your decision as well. Not only because it's ridiculous to live your life by "what if?", but also because the threat of violence happens every day now, not just on certain select days.
What's to stop a bomber from coming unannounced to a school and detonating an explosive device? Or a maniacal gunman intent on killing himself and taking dozens of others with him? Just because there's an announcement made that "today is the day" doesn't mean it's going to happen that day. Like 9/11. I seriously doubt we'd have a repeat on THAT VERY DAY b/c PEOPLE WOULD EXPECT IT. Any smart terrorist knows you gotta take 'em by surprise!
