About trusting hurt and pain & not trusting love and happiness
I think part of it is because we are bombarded with images of pain adn hurt and of love not working or happiness not really existing.Look at all the TV shows and talk shows and movies. There are so few these days where people actually have lives which are happy and relationships that work. Even the news never shows atories of people say - winning the lottery and being really happy for years, it's win the lottery and people cheat them out of their money or they lose it all. I think so often now we are told that we can't trust being happy and we are almost brainwashed by the fact people who are miserable are the ones we always see.
I mean would Dr Phil do a week of shows of people who's marriages are happy and kids are well adjusted? It wouldn't rate.
Plus people would automatically assume it's some hidden secret that would destroy it.

I think that pain is often the yardstick we use to measure our self-worth. Why else would so many people, for example, proudly profess to putting in so much overtime doing jobs they dislike, or running that extra lap even though their muscles are screaming out in agony? We often judge our accomplishments by our ordeals.
